first_imgThe National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, the minor league governing body, made the long-expected announcement. National Association president Pat O’Conner says the leagues “don’t have national TV revenues.” O’Conner estimated 85-90% of revenue was related to ticket money, concessions, parking and ballpark advertising. The minors drew 41.5 million fans last year for 176 teams in 15 leagues, averaging 4,044 fans per game. MLB teams are planning for a 60-game regular season and most of their revenue will derive from broadcast money. In other baseball news:Major League Baseball says a team will not specifically announce a COVID-19 injured list placement for a player who is removed from the club after testing positive, just an IL trip. MLB’s operations manual says a positive test and exhibiting symptoms that require isolation for additional assessment or exposure to someone who has had the virus are cause for placement on the new COVID-19 IL. — Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is optimistic right fielder Aaron Judge, left-hander James Paxton, center fielder Aaron Hicks and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton will be ready to play in the time for New York’s rescheduled opener at World Series champion Washington on July 23. Judge did not play in any exhibition games due to discomfort in his right pectoral muscle and shoulder that he felt when swinging. Paxton had surgery Feb. 5 to repair a herniated disk in his back. — Outfielder Heston Kjerstad agreed to a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles that includes a $5.2 million signing bonus, well below the slot value of $7,789,900 assigned to the No. 2 overall pick. The 21-year-old joins a rebuilding Orioles team that has lost at least 100 games in two straight seasons and used the No. 1 pick in 2019 to secure catcher Adley Rutschman out of Oregon State. —The San Diego Padres have acquired infielder Jorge Mateo from the Oakland Athletics in the first trade since baseball resumed after a shutdown of more than three months due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Padres will send either a player or cash to the A’s for the 25-year-old Mateo, who will be added to the player pool for the resumption of spring training. The Padres are scheduled to have their first workout Friday at Petco Park. — Shohei Ohtani (SHOH’-hay oh-TAH’-nee) will resume his two-way career with the Los Angeles Angels when baseball returns. Angels general manager Billy Eppler confirms his Japanese star will pitch and hit in the majors this season. Ohtani was only a designated hitter last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He wasn’t expected to pitch in 2020 until at least May, and Eppler confirmed that the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t altered the Angels’ plans. The Angels could have a six-man rotation for the short season.— Sinkerballing reliever Jared Hughes and the New York Mets agreed to a $700,000, one-year contract, a deal that amounts to $259,259 in prorated pay over the 60-game season. He had a 6.35 ERA over five appearances and 5 2/3 innings during spring training with the Houston Astros and was released March 19. A right-hander who turns 35 on July 4, Hughes was 5-5 with a 4.04 ERA last season for Cincinnati and Philadelphia. — The Oakland Athletics are selling cardboard cutouts with fans’ photos that they will put in the seats at the Coliseum this season. The team also plans to mix in images of former players and celebrities alongside the fan cutouts. Major League Baseball is looking to play a 60-game regular season this summer because of the coronavirus. There will be no fans at ballparks on opening day, but some markets are hoping to play in front of smaller crowds by the end of the season. The cardboard cutouts for A’s games range in price from $49 to $129. Proceeds from the sales go to charity.VIRUS OUTBREAK-NBA-PELICANS July 1, 2020 VIRUS OUTBREAK-NHL-HURRICANESHurricanesRALEIGH, N.C. Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — As monuments, statues and memorials around the world come under increased scrutiny, some former Most Valuable Players in Major League Baseball are saying they’d like to see a change in future MVP plaques. The trophy is engraved with the name of Kenesaw Mountain Landis in large letters. Landis was baseball’s first commissioner and there were no Black players in the majors during his reign from 1920 until his death in 1944. His name has been on every American League and National League MVP plaque since then. Barry Larkin, Terry Pendleton and Mike Schmidt say they’d like to see it pulled off.Toward the end of his tenure as commissioner, Landis told owners they were free to sign Black players. But there is no evidence he pushed for baseball integration.FORMULA ONE-PROTESTScenter_img In other developments related to the coronavirus:— The LPGA Tour lost another tournament when the Canadian Women’s Open was canceled because of travel restrictions and quarantine requirements from the COVID-19 pandemic. The CP Women’s Open was scheduled for Sept. 3-6 at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver. The LPGA Tour and Golf Canada say it will return to Shaughnessy the last week in August next year.— Up to 800 spectators per day will be allowed at a tennis exhibition in Berlin in mid-July. Griffin says the Pelicans have had no players test positive since. When the Pelicans return to action on July 30 against Utah at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports complex outside of Orlando, Florida, they will be 3½ games out of the Western Conference’s final playoff spot with eight games left. MEMPHIS, Tenn. Morant then apologized, saying the post didn’t “accurately convey” what he wanted to share. Morant said he knows “there are good cops” out there. The league, Nike and the players association are reportedly working on a deal that would allow players to replace the names on the backs of their jerseys with social justice statements. first_img Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies ANAHEIM – Kyle Garlick’s long baseball journey wound back to Southern California this week. It always does. After the Dodgers’ rookie outfielder played one game in Cincinnati, two in Pittsburgh, three in San Francisco, and dressed for another series in St. Petersburg, Fla., without appearing in a game against the Rays, he finally had a locker at Angel Stadium on Monday and Tuesday.Garlick is attending the Dodgers Foundation gala Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium. On Thursday, he’ll have a locker and a nameplate at his home park for the first time. Garlick said five family members will be in attendance for that night’s game against the Cubs: his mother, Cary, father Steve, plus an aunt, an uncle and his grandmother. That’s a relatively quaint gathering under the circumstances, but quaint gatherings have followed Garlick for some time now. He was scarcely recruited by college teams out of Chino Hills High, nor did he attract the attention of MLB scouts. A broken ankle suffered late in his junior year torpedoed his chances of appearing on the showcase circuit during his critical final summer in high school. How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Cary Garlick is doing well now. She had a recurrence of breast cancer in early 2018, just as Kyle was set to report for spring training. Since having surgery, Kyle said, her cancer went back into remission; she was even able to attend some games at Triple-A Oklahoma City last year.Garlick moved up the Dodgers’ minor league ranks quickly. He returned to Southern California with advanced Class-A affiliate Rancho Cucamonga by the end of 2015, just 46 games into his professional career. Garlick began this season, his third full year as a pro, by hitting 12 home runs in 43 games with Oklahoma City. Finally, the call came from the big leagues, followed by a series of flights that took him around the country with few plate appearances interspersed. For anyone among the small crowds that have been rooting for Garlick from the beginning, his latest homecoming was a just reward.“Nobody deserves it more than him,” said Kyle Billingsley, Garlick’s head coach at Chino Hills High. “He worked his butt off. I’m really excited for him and his family.”“He’s a great kid,” Betten said.To hear his amateur coaches tell it, Garlick’s journey to the pros doesn’t fall in any of the stereotypical buckets. He was neither a gritty underdog nor a can’t-miss talent. Garlick combined a bit of both traits, but his broken ankle in high school, his wrist injury at Oregon (Garlick said it was never formally diagnosed), and the delicacy of drafting a hitter who crushes Division II pitching threatened to shoot down his star before it could rise.Betten said he didn’t even recruit Garlick out of high school. He knew Garlick was a Division I talent, and Division II coaches simply don’t land that caliber of player. The Broncos’ 40-something-year-old field and attendance that was measured in the hundreds were not compelling recruiting tools.Related Articles Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start center_img Garlick landed a scholarship to play for the University of Oregon anyway. But after a promising sophomore season, a wrist injury ended his junior year early. He graduated from Oregon without ever being drafted.Because he was granted a medical redshirt year, Garlick still had one year of Division I eligibility after the 2014 season. He never used it.“My mom was sick at the time. She had breast cancer,” he said. “I wanted to go home and be closer to her. And so when I went to (Cal Poly) Pomona I was just living at home, commuting back and forth. Pomona happened to give me a good scholarship so I didn’t have to pay too much back.”Garlick’s last season of college baseball, the one that got him drafted by the Dodgers in June 2015, was effectively set against the background of a small family gathering. Certainly hitting a school-record 17 home runs for the Division II Broncos helped Garlick’s draft stock. He liked the program. He liked head coach Randy Betten. But that isn’t why Garlick came home for his final year of college baseball.“I think it helped a lot just because family is the most important thing,” he said. “It should be the most important thing in all of our lives. Just to be able to live at home … when I was at Oregon, I would come home for Christmas break for a month, maybe a month or two in the summer if I wasn’t playing ball. That would really be it. The rest of the time would just be sporadic visits here and there, being able to see them. Going back home, being able to see her, I think it made a huge difference for both of us mentally.” On the off-chance he might land such a player, “usually there’s a tool missing – they maybe have power but they don’t have a position,” Betten said. “Kyle was a good all-around player. Good size. He could run. He could hit for average. He had a position. Some of those guys end up coming back for some reason: maybe a coaching change in Division I, maybe playing time.”In retrospect, Garlick looks like a steal for the Dodgers, just as he was for Betten. He was a 28th-round draft pick, a round that has thus far yielded two Triple-A players and no other major leaguers. His signing bonus was a mere $1,000. That’s not an unusual price for a college senior, though it rarely heralds a future major league talent. Even on the standard rookie salary, that’s about one-third of what Garlick earns in a single day now.Garlick’s first stint with the Dodgers lasted four days. His second lasted two days. His third stint entered Day 8 on Wednesday. Regardless of whether there’s a Day 9, Garlick has already beaten the odds to make it back home.UP NEXTDodgers (LHP Clayton Kershaw) vs. Cubs (LHP Jon Lester), Thursday, 7 p.m., SportsNet LA (where available), 570 AM Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season Fire danger is on Dave Roberts’ mind as Dodgers head to San Francisco last_img read more
