APTN file photo)Kent DriscollAPTN National NewsIQALUIT — Embattled Nunavut MP Hunter Tootoo admitted Wednesday that the reason he left his cabinet position in government and the Liberal caucus was due to an “inappropriate relationship.”On Wednesday, as the country was still digesting the terms of reference for the national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women, Tootoo went on CBC in Iqaluit and read a prepared statement acknowledging the “inappropriate relationship.”On Thursday, he took questions from only a select group of northern reporters. But Tootoo offered little information.“I voluntarily informed the Prime Minister, that I made a mistake, that I had engaged in a potential inappropriate relationship,” said Tootoo. “And I knew in my mind that is not behaviour that I believe is appropriate. I was ashamed of that, I’m deeply sorry, and that’s why I resigned from cabinet and stepped away from caucus.”Despite APTN Iqaluit being across the street from his office, and 2 minutes from his home, Tootoo would only answer questions by phone and refused to go on camera.“As you can imagine, I have a number of interviews to do, and the easiest for me was to just to do it over the phone. And I’m dealing with the northern media, talking to my constituents,” Tootoo said. The Globe and Mail asked Tootoo repeatedly about a “young staffer.” APTN asked Tootoo about what kind of relationship between two adults is “inappropriate” enough for removal from caucus if it didn’t involve staff?“I recognized that I made a mistake, I engaged in what I felt was, I believe was, a consensual but inappropriate relationship, and I did what I believe was the right thing. It was the right thing to do,” said Tootoo.Tootoo said he planned to stay in office, and maintains that he can be an effective MP for Nunavut.“If I wouldn’t have taken the steps I did, it would have affected my ability to do my job, and do my job properly. I recognized alcohol was taking control of my life, and taking me down a road I did not want to down,” said Tootoo.Independent Nunavut MP Hunter Tootoo addresses media in Iqaluit July 27. Tootoo says he is staying on as Nunavut MP. File photo The Prime Minister’s Office is also facing more questions about Tootoo’s removal. In addition to the prepared statement he read Wednesday night, Tootoo put this on Twitter.“Deeply sorry. Voluntarily told PMO about consensual relationship. Was asked to keep it private. I resigned went to addiction treatment.”Tootoo said he is keeping the identities of those involved quiet.“I was not asked by the Prime Minister’s Office to keep this quiet. There’s only so much room on Twitter to put anything as I said in my statement last night, I was asked by the individual, to protect her privacy, and I’m respecting that wish,” said Tootoo.Despite being banished, Tootoo repeated an earlier statement about holding the federal Liberal Party in high regard.“I have the utmost respect for the Prime Minister, I believe in his government, and nothing’s changed on that front,” said Tootoo.APTN asked Tootoo if he could do it all again, would he have come out sooner with this information.”My interest, right from May 31st, was to protect the privacy of the individual involved, as was requested,” he said. “And that’s what I attempted to do, and am doing”Tootoo said he planned to tour various parts of Nunavut before returning to Parliament on September 15th.That is where Nunavummiut will learn if their newly independent MP can truly represent the territory now that he is no longer a Liberal cabinet firstname.lastname@example.orgFollow @kentdriscoll read more

“The unprecedented numbers have put the border guard stations, police stations and migrant detention centres into a critical state,” Manfred Nowak, the UN Special Rapporteur on torture, said in a statement at the end of a 10-day fact-finding mission to Greece. He said he believed the Greek Government was willing to face the problem, but the challenge was trying to implement new policies and rules amid the current economic crisis.“Greece should not carry the burden of receiving the vast majority of all irregular migrants entering the European Union,” Mr. Nowak said. “This is a truly European problem which needs a joint European solution.”He urged the EU to renegotiate the “Dublin II Regulation” – an EU law that determines the bloc’s Member State responsible for looking into an application for an asylum-seeker – in order to ensure fair sharing of the burden, while taking into consideration the legitimate concerns of asylum seekers and irregular migrants.Mr. Nowak said he concurred with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and human rights groups’ recommendation that returns under Dublin II be stopped because of the inadequate protection against refoulement and the inhuman detention conditions for migrants in Greece.During his mission, the independent expert conducted unannounced visits to detention centres and interviewed those held there in private, thanks to the cooperation of the Greek police and judicial services. He found that some had been confined up for up to six months in overcrowded, filthy cells, with inadequate ventilation and lighting. Access to medical care, lawyers and interpreters was also limited, he said.“In a number of Criminal Investigation Departments (CID), I found more than 40 foreigners held in administrative detention in office space temporarily used as make-shift cells,” he added.“Such conditions of detention clearly amount to inhuman and degrading treatment, in violation of Articles 7 and 10 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,” Mr. Nowak stressed. He said that the asylum-seekers were generally detained while waiting for their claims to be processed, resulting in a backlog of 52,000 cases as of August. An agreement with Turkey allows the deportation of immigrants to neighbouring countries, with those from Iran, Iraq and Syria facing serious risk of being deported without proper assessments of their claims, a violation of the principle of non-refoulement under the Convention against Torture, the expert said. 20 October 2010Greek prisons are congested and the judiciary under stress as hundreds of irregular newcomers flow into the country daily via neighbouring Turkey, a United Nations independent human rights expert said today, urging the European Union to help Greece deal with the problem of migrants. read more
However the Speaker said that today was the first time that he was informed of the decision by the NFF. The National Freedom Front (NFF) informed Parliament today that it has withdrawn from the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and should be recognised as an independent political party.NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa said that the NFF had earlier informed Speaker Karu Jayasuriya that it was no more with the UPFA. Weerawansa however insisted that he had already informed the Speaker and so the NFF must be recognised as an independent political party. 20110.9015Julio Jones0.9992 20090.8782Andre Smith0.9994 In 2009, the first-round picks averaged a 0.8782 rating in 247sports.com’s composite rankings, which combine the listings from all of the major recruiting services. That average peaked at 0.9156 in 2017. In 247sports.com’s 2019 composite rankings, that jump from 0.8782 to 0.9156 would equate to more than 300 spots (from 549th to 216th). Last year, the first-round average dipped back to 0.8961, the inexact science proven by Baker Mayfield, the other Josh Allen, unrated Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch and pitcher-turned-tight end Hayden Hurst. This year’s projected first round was similarly highly recruited. We isolated the average top 32 picks using mock drafts, and those picks averaged a past recruiting ranking of 0.9135. Only Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, with a recruiting ranking of 0.7898, had a lower score than Allen’s 0.7965 of our projected first round. There were 10 future first-round picks among the top 50 high school recruits in 2014, eight among the top 50 in 2013 and 10 in 2012 — all high marks since 2008. For now, the 2015 recruiting class is off to a good start, after six of the top 50 recruits became first-round picks last spring, three years after graduating high school. Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray and Clemson’s Christian Wilkins are poised to join that group Thursday, pushing the total in the range of 2012-2014.The 2016 class of high school recruits will get started, too, when names like Dexter Lawrence, Rashan Gary, Ed Oliver and Nick Bosa — all juniors — break in. Then comes Alabama sophomore Tua Tagovailoa (most likely) in 2020, and Clemson freshman Trevor Lawrence in 2021. There are still plenty of opportunities for unsung high school recruits like Allen to make their mark in college, but the highly rated players are getting most of the attention in the NFL draft. 20180.8961Derwin James0.9982 20170.9156Leonard Fournette0.9996 High school stars are getting lots of NFL loveThe average high school recruitment ratings for first-round NFL draft classes since 2009, along with the rating for this year’s class as projected by mock drafts YearAverage RatingPlayerRating 20120.8954Trent Richardson0.9972 Highest Rated 20140.9012Jadeveon Clowney1.0000 20130.8980Sharrif Floyd0.9970 20160.9044Robert Nkemdiche1.0000 20150.9086D.J. The former two-star recruit out of Montclair, New Jersey — now projected to be taken in the top five of the NFL draft — had only one initial Division I offer, from nearby Monmouth. But late in the 2015 recruiting cycle, when Kentucky had missed out on a handful of players and needed bodies, the Wildcats took a flier on Allen and gave him an SEC offer. Allen did the rest, breaking out with 17 sacks last season and winning the Bednarik Award as the country’s best defensive player. How does a 6-foot-5, 262-pound pass rusher end up overlooked? Allen didn’t always fit the mold of a future star. Kentucky’s 2015 roster listed him at just 210 pounds, and he didn’t start playing defensive end until his senior season in high school, after moving from Alabama to New Jersey. There will always be top NFL draft picks who were missed by the high school recruiting ratings. Philadelphia quarterback Carson Wentz, drafted No. 2 overall in 2016, was unrated out of high school, while Chicago pass rusher Khalil Mack, drafted fifth in 2014, was a two-star recruit like Allen. But those stories are the exceptions — the first round is still filled with players who caught the eye of recruiting websites while still in high school. We looked at the past 10 years of first-round picks and their ratings entering high school and found that players unrated or receiving a rating equivalent to less than three stars averaged just four slots in the first round. And in that time frame, the recruitment ratings of the first-round picks have actually been getting higher overall. These ratings of high school and junior-college players are based on highlight tapes, game stats, observations and recruiting camps. 247sports.com publishes a composite ranking, which averages the ratings from its own site, ESPN.com and Rivals.com. A perfect score would be 1.000, with the five-star prospects typically above 0.980. read more

He warned her he was giving her an absolutely last chance. The case will return before the courts in October.Comments have been closed as the case is before the courts. Short URL read more
Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Joanne Kountourogiannis is a risk taker. At the tender age of 26, she gave up her career as a graphic designer to follow in the family business and open her own Greek yiros business. Has the risk paid off? After speaking with her, with her family support network right behind her, and her steadfast business partner, I can say with the utmost of certainty, her path will be a successful one. While Joanne was working as a graphic designer, she noticed something wasn’t right. “I found myself complaining I was bored. I spent all day in front of a computer not interacting with anyone. My mum approached me and said ‘you’ve been talking about starting up your own business, what about you open your own business?’ The Lamb Spit BBQ at the Central Markets in Adelaide has been in Joanne’s family for over 10 years, and Joanne’s business partner, George Kritikos, was one of the original founders. When Joanne’s mother, Mary noticed the determination in her daughter – that is paramount in becoming a small business owner – she set her up with the challenge of opening a sister business of the Lamb Spit BBQ in the seaside suburb of Semaphore. Joanne grabbed hold of the challenge with both hands and from the minute her mother put the idea in her head, she had the business up and running within a month. “When we took over the business,” explains Joanne, “we put our own spin on things. Our shop has more of a home-style feel to it, there’s more of the Greek culture behind the food, the taste and the flavours. George does a lovely job of marinating the meats so the taste you get is not like a take-away shop. You go there for the food – it’s good food in a very traditional Greek style.” The eatery allows you to dine-in or take-away. “The garlic sauce, the hummus and the falafel we sell, we make ourselves from scratch so they’re not full of preservatives. They’re not from big tubs, all mass-produced but are made inhouse and are filled with fresh tastes and flavours. You can definitely taste the difference.” Joanne confesses that although she would help out in her parents’ business when they were short-staffed, that was nothing compared to owning your own business. “I knew what I was getting into but knowing it and being in it is a little different as well. “You don’t go to work the hours you are at work: the minute you get home you are constantly thinking about work and thinking what you need to do for the next day. For example, if you forget to order something – you don’t order the bread, you don’t order meat, fruit and vegetables – everything works together so if one aspect is missing none of it can come together properly.” Having her parents in the same industry does allow Joanne to have a base to bounce ideas off and learn more about her business. And working with her partner George allows her to get a different perspective on running a small business and gives a new dynamic to the business. “The other day we were talking about advertising on the Internet and George was quite dubious about it whereas I was the complete opposite and thought ‘yeah, it’s a great idea, let’s do this!’ In terms of the clientele and customer base, I think it works really well because you get some of your older people who don’t want a younger person telling them what to eat whereas George has the experience of dealing with older clientele and knows the recipes inside out as they are all his. And the younger dynamic provides a good balance.” Joanne admits there is still a long road ahead and her journey will be full of challenges – what will happen in the colder months, with staff, and there is the nonexistent social life for her. “The first month was really stressful because I was always worrying about everything but now that we’ve been there for three and half months I’ve settled in. The biggest advantage is that you are doing it for yourself, working for yourself. Your drive is different. “You are more than happy to be putting in more than 60 hours a week – you have more passion behind it. I really enjoy being young in small business. I get people coming in all the time asking me to talk to the boss as they all think I work there. You want it to be so successful as you put everything in it.” read more

Time Inc. struck an exclusive deal with digital marketing platform GumGum, the self-proclaimed inventor of in-image advertising, allowing the publisher to provide GumGum’s image-overlaying technology to advertisers across its digital portfolio. GumGum’s in-image ads are available in five different formats, depending on size considerations, objectives—performance, awareness, or engagement—and the need for animation. The ads, which can be hidden with a click, can either completely obscure the image before settling down in a less conspicuous location, or take the form of a slightly more discrete banner across the bottom. GumGum claims an 81 percent viewability rate for its editorially-embedded ads and better engagement to other visual ad formats. Founded in 2007, the Santa Monica, CA-based company recently secured $26 million in funding from Morgan Stanley Expansion Capital and is eyeing an initial public offering in 2017, reports The Wall Street Journal. “We’ve found a partner that has built powerful technology solutions that will help us unlock the value of these compelling images for our advertisers,” said Time Inc. SVP of advertising Andy Blau, in an official statement. “We are very pleased to join forces with GumGum to harness their technology in order to deliver highly viewable premium ad products and services for our partners.” As image-rich content plays an increasingly-vital role in online media, publishers continue to seek new ways to bypass obstacles like ad-blocking while still maintaining brand integrity and providing audiences with a quality visual experience. The new partnership is the latest in a series of recent Time Inc. maneuvers aimed at finding new profit streams, as revenues fell six percent in Q3 2015. In October alone, the publisher scrapped former Walmart mainstay All You and acquired digital brands HelloGiggles, xoJane and xoVain. read more

The Cyprus economy may be demonstrating positive growth rates, but the persisting high levels of public debt and non-performing loans (NPLs) must be addressed, the Chamber of Commerce has said.As part of its monitoring mission in Cyprus, Troika representatives (IMF, European Commission and the European Central Bank) met on Thursday with representatives of the Cyprus chamber of commerce (Keve), to discuss the developments and prospects for the Cyprus economy, the business and investment environment, public sector reforms, as well as labour market and unemployment developments. The two delegations found that the issues still straining the island’s economy are mainly the persisting high levels of NPLs and public debt, the slow (if not non-existent) rate of reforms implementation, issues in the justice sector, and the inefficiency of bureaucratic processes, especially in strategic investment cases.Various external threats to the Cyprus economy were also identified, including Brexit, the rate of development of the global economy, and the island’s dependence on specific markets. The Keve representatives stressed the need for immediate corrective measures, and referred to its efforts in this direction as regards both the executive and legislative powers. The Troika delegation was also informed of recent labour developments and of the upcoming implementation of the National Health Scheme (Gesy). You May LikeCalifornia Earthquake AuthorityMake earthquake insurance a family priorityCalifornia Earthquake AuthorityUndoLivestlyChip And Joanna’s $18M Mansion Is Perfect, But It’s The Backyard Everyone Is Talking AboutLivestlyUndoPopularEverythingColorado Mom Adopted Two Children, Months Later She Learned Who They Really ArePopularEverythingUndo Concern over falling tourism numbersUndoCypriot tycoon launches ‘Bank of Cannabis’UndoArgaka mukhtar stops conservationists againUndoby Taboolaby Taboola read more
