By Kenneth JacksonAPTN National NewsThe Mohawk protesters who have been holding a blockade near Tyendinaga since Sunday are now vowing to increase the intensity in the coming days after the federal government failed to call a national inquiry Friday into missing and murdered Indigenous women. The protesters held a meeting Friday afternoon to discuss their next steps and decided they will ramp the blockade up.“That means the tone of the blockade is going to shift,” said Shawn Brant, who has been acting as the spokesman of the blockade. “The government feels they can ignore First Nation communities and individuals looking for justice and we tend meet them on the stage they can no longer ignore.”Brant wouldn’t say what that means, but it appears the increased direct action will be happening soon. Up until now it’s been described as peaceful as the protesters wanted the message of missing and murdered Indigenous women to be heard and not conflict. In the meantime, the blockade won’t be coming down that has been holding a portion of Shannonville Road just south of Hwy. 401, and about a kilometre from Tyendinaga territory, since Sunday at about 8:30 p.m.Brant had hoped the government would call an inquiry upon the release of a report based on weeks of testimony at a government committee but the report, in his opinion and other critics, basically called to keep the status-quo.“There will be consequences for this. We simply can’t say the status quo is acceptable,” said Brant.Brant said the group reviewed the committee’s report before coming to their decision. read more
TORONTO — YouTube says it’ll close the company’s only permanent Canadian studio later this year as it shifts strategies. The media giant sent an email on Thursday to its online creator community outlining plans to replace its Toronto studio with a “pop-up” approach that’ll roll out temporary studios in different regions of the country. FILE – In this Dec. 15, 2007 file photo, a box of General Mills’ Cheerios is seen on a shelf at a Shaw’s Supermarket in Gloucester, Mass. General Mills says it will start labeling products across the country that contain genetically modified ingredients to comply with a law that is set to go into effect in Vermont. The maker of Cheerios cereal, Progresso soups and Yoplait yogurt notes it is impractical to label its products for just one state, so the disclosures required by Vermont starting in July 2016 will be on its products throughout the U.S. (AP Photo/Lisa Poole, file) General Mills to label products with GMOs ahead of Vt. law NEW YORK, N.Y. – General Mills said Friday it will start labeling products across the country that contain genetically modified ingredients to comply with a law set to go into effect in Vermont. The maker of Cheerios and Yoplait said it is impractical to label its products for just one state. And with no deal yet for national legislation on GMO labeling, the company said it decided to add the disclosures required by Vermont starting in July to products throughout the U.S.A spokesman for General Mills, Mike Siemienas, said the labeling will appear on products over the next several weeks. The move comes as federal legislation regarding the labeling of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, has stalled in Congress. The food industry has pushed to make labeling for GMOs voluntary, and sought to prohibit states from enacting a patchwork of laws around the country. The Grocery Manufacturers Association, which represents the nation’s largest food companies, said in a statement that the decision by General Mills underscored the need for a national law.“One small state’s law is setting labeling standards for consumers across the country,” the association said.In January, Campbell Soup Co. broke rank with the industry and said it supported federal legislation for mandatory labeling, and that it would start disclosing the presence of GMOs in its products if a national standard wasn’t established in a “reasonable amount of time.”The disclosures by Campbell and General Mills may be easy to miss, unless people are looking for them.An image provided by Campbell to illustrate compliance with the Vermont law showed a can of Spaghetti-Os with the words “Partially produced with genetic engineering” in tiny print at the bottom of the back of the can.General Mills did not say that it supported mandatory labeling. But in addition to the coming disclosures, the Minneapolis-based company said people could search its website at ask.generalmills.com to see which products have GMOs.Examples of General Mills products that use genetically engineered ingredients include varieties of Cheerios, Cocoa Puffs, Franken Berry, Hamburger Helper, Kix, Nature Valley bars and Pillsbury pancake batter.Genetically modified seeds are engineered to have certain traits, such as resistance to herbicides. The majority of the country’s corn and soybean crop is now genetically modified, with much of that going to animal feed. Corn and soybeans also are made into widely used ingredients such as high-fructose corn syrup, corn starch and soybean oil.The Food and Drug Administration has said the genetically modified ingredients on the market now are safe. But advocates for labeling say the issue needs additional study, and that people have the right to know whether the products they buy contain the ingredients.Among supporters of labeling are many organic companies; products cannot contain GMOs to qualify as organic.___Follow Candice Choi at www.twitter.com/candicechoiFollow Mary Clare Jalonick at www.twitter.com/MCJalonick by Candice Choi And Mary Clare Jalonick, The Associated Press Posted Mar 18, 2016 1:00 pm MDT Last Updated Mar 18, 2016 at 4:40 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email read more
Before leaving the Liberian capital, Monrovia, Helen Clark, Administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), said late Monday that the crisis will not be over until there are zero cases of Ebola, which has affected more 23,000 people, with some 9,300 deaths.“It is clear that no one will be happy until there are zero cases across all three epicentre countries,” the UNDP Administrator told a press conference in Monrovia. “But the important message now is that international solidarity with Liberia should not end at the end of the emergency phase. It must continue in support of recovery from this terrible crisis.Noting schools had re-opened in Liberia on Monday, shuttered for more than six months to help prevent transmission, were finally re-opened, she said Liberia was emerging from a “very traumatic time”. There was now, she said, reason for hope.Tasked by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the lead the UN system’s recovery efforts, UNDP is committed to working with Liberia as it follows its path to recovery in a way that is consistent with the Government and people’s own longer term development aspirations.Among the highlights of her visit to Liberia, according to UNDP, was a meeting with Josephine Dolley, an Ebola survivor who lost 29 members of her family including her husband and three children. Ms. Dolley has adopted six children whom she met whilst in an Ebola Emergency Treatment Unit, all of them Ebola survivors who lost their parents and siblings. The UNDP administrator also met with the so-called “Pink Panthers” motorcycle club, a group of women who offer motorbike taxi services. UNDP has been working with the women riders to find ways to make their jobs safer, including in the context of Ebola. Ms. Clark was invited to be an honorary member of the Pink Panthers, and was presented with her own pink jacket. Ms. Clark also told the press conference that an upcoming meeting in Brussels, Belgium, would be aimed at maintaining international solidarity around achieving zero Ebola cases and considering the support needed to help Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone recover from the crisis. As she began the final leg of her mission to the three-worst affected countries by the Ebola outbreak with a two-day visit to Sierra Leone, where she arrived late Monday, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced that Ebola-ravaged rural communities in Guinea will benefit from new food security initiatives.FAO said tens of thousands of people in rural areas of Guinea worst-hit by the Ebola epidemic will receive training on how to prevent the spread of the disease and support in producing food and generating income, through an agreement involving the World Bank and the country’s government. As part of the initiative, $5 million will be invested in FAO’s Ebola Response Programme, which aims to assist rural households whose livelihoods and access to food are severely threatened by the impact of Ebola. Some 30,000 households will be sensitized on measures to counter the transmission of the disease in rural areas. Experienced rural development and extension field workers will undertake awareness activities combined with the provision of hygiene kits to rural communities.Beneficiaries include hunters and women who used to sell bush meat but lost this source of income after authorities banned this trade in order to reduce the potential risk of exposure to Ebola through contact with wildlife. The programme will also target women groups involved in rice-processing activities.According to the latest FAO/World Food Programme Crop and Food Security Assessment, a total of 470,000 people might be food insecure by March 2015 due to the Ebola outbreak. read more

The biggest mistake we made – Fianna Fáil ministers and collectively as a government – was that we didn’t stand back from the general consensus in terms of raising expenditure and reducing taxes. Basically we reduced our tax base too much, we spent too much. Now it looks like he and his party are on the up again and you’d be forgiven for wondering whether large parts of the electorate are suffering from collective amnesia. Who are these voters and don’t they remember how cross we all were with Fianna Fáil for leading the country into ruin? They are, more likely than not, the ‘Fianna Fail faithful’ and they are not called faithful for nothing.Fianna Fail’s relationship with Irish body politicI’m reminded of the old joke about the Catholic who was asked if they’d ever considered divorce? “Never” was the reply, “but murder every day”. It’s funny because it’s true. The relationship between Fianna Fáil and the Irish body politic is just as deep and just as fraught, its both reflects and reinforces our political and social conventions and in doing so helps to shape the way that Irish politics is understood. It is cultural as much as political. And we are by no means the only European voters to forgive the mistakes of our political leaders. In Italy, the extent of the full-scale sovereign debt crisis in autumn 2011, accusations of fraud and a touch of underage sex, led to Berlusconi’s resignation; yet barely fifteen months later his extravagant campaign promises make it impossible to discount his influence over the composition of the next government. So, how bad does one have to behave to be knocked out of politics? Plenty bad and then some!MacArthur caseIn July 1982, Malcolm MacArthur bludgeoned a nurse to death in the back seat of her car, which was parked just outside the American Ambassador’s residence in Dublin. He was then escorted away from the scene of the crime by an ambulance whose driver, seeing the hospital sticker on the car windscreen, mistakenly mistook him for a doctor with patient. In August, MacArthur was arrested at the Attorney General’s residence, where he had been staying as house-guest for some weeks. The Attorney General, no doubt in a state of shock, continued with his holiday plans and left the country for New York without making a statement to the police, thus adding to the immense damage to government. The Taoiseach subsequently described the affair as ‘grotesque’, ‘unbelievable’, ‘bizarre’ and ‘unprecedented’, leading to the invention of a new word, GUBU, coined by the journalist Conor Cruise O’Brien and widely used to describe some of the strange incidents that continued to dog that Fianna Fáil government and its leader, Charles Haughey.Grassroots supportersDid that lead to the end of Fianna Fáil? No, of course not. Years later, after a string of tribunals, political scandals and economic catastrophe – just like Mark Twain’s unwarranted obituary – reports of Fianna Fáil’s death are greatly exaggerated. Why?There are many reasons – some to do with our political culture and some to do with our political system – and only some of them related directly to Fianna Fáil and Irish voters. What is clear is that in our electoral system, the importance of political teams operating on the ground is hugely significant. In our system, a candidate with good ‘ground coverage’ in terms of party workers, constituency clinics, canvassers and supporters, will always have the advantage over candidates who do not enjoy this level of support. The Fianna Fáil party has this in spades. So, the only thing that is really remarkable about Fianna Fáil’s fortunes during the last eighteen months is that even their own supporters and canvassers were so sick of them that they did not vote for them in the last election. What we’ve seen is a trial separation: but in a committed relationship, you can only stay mad for so long. After the heat of the row is over, you have to look to your options. Are you better off leaving a long term relationship that you’ve invested all your young years in to go find someone else? Are you really sure that anyone else is any better?Fianna Fáil is up on the polls because the relationship it holds between its party and its people is for the most part a long-term and co-dependent one. Fianna Fáil people have forgiven the party and now they want to move on. The rise of Fianna Fáil in opinion polls is the return of its support base, picking up the pieces and moving on. For the rest of us who are still holding out for something better, the future is less easy to predict.Maura Adshead is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and Public Administration at the University of Limerick. Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Despite the large number of Australians of Greek descent, estimated to be around 900,000 in Australia, two-way trade figures continue to be poor and even in decline in recent years, especially in regards to exports from Australia to Greece. According to some estimates, there are approximately 300,000 people of Greek heritage that live and work in the Greater Melbourne area, 175,000 in Sydney and NSW, 75,000 in Adelaide and 20,000 in Perth. Whatever the precise numbers, the fact is that our fellow Greeks in Australia are now an integral part of Australian society, making an invaluable and universally acknowledged contribution to the country’s economy and development. Trade figures could be significantly higher. In a visit to Greece last February, I had the opportunity to meet with Australia’s new Ambassador to Greece, Jenny Bloomfield. In a discussion regarding what needs to be done to increase bilateral trade, Ambassador Bloomfield responded that the newly-established Hellenic-Australian Business Council in Greece, based in Athens with branches in Thessaloniki and Irakleio, will play an important role not only in supporting trade and investment through business matching, networking and two-way business delegations, but will also provide a framework for bilateral cooperation, dialogue and exchange. In a subsequent meeting with Greece’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Greek Australian Dimitris Dollis, I asked what Greece is doing to increase trade with Australia. Mr Dollis stated that pending the IMF approval of a further bailout program for Greece (at the time), the Greek Government was preparing to assist Greek companies that wanted to develop their export businesses. Unfortunately Greece has never had a strong export program similar to that of other countries. Most Greek products are still consumed within the diaspora community with very few products trickling into the mainstream Australia market. One of the reasons for this, is that importers in Australia have generally received weak marketing support from suppliers in Greece, more of which is needed to market and showcase Greek products to the mainstream market in a dynamic way. In contrast Italian and Spanish products have been more successful in making inroads into the mainstream market. The Italian Community in Australia has traditionally supported Italian products from Italy with pride and most Italian restaurants would only source and serve products directly from Italy, creating both strong awareness and demand over the years. The same applied to any Asian, Indian or other ethnic restaurant or cafe, which considered it trendy to serve and promote its homeland’s products. By contrast, Greek establishments started this trend only four or five years ago. As the Hellenic Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, HACCI recognises that there is room for improvement and good opportunities for Greek products that are of extremely high quality.Through a new campaign called “Go Greek” which MP for Dandenong and President of the World Hellenic Interparliamentary Association, John Pandazopoulos, has been strongly promoting, HACCI has been participating by using Greek food and beverage products at all its functions to as great an extent as possible. In the past few months, there has been an increase in inquiries from Greek companies looking to export their products and services to Australia. HACCI has seen many companies scheduling business visits to Australia who come and do their own market research with a view to penetrating the Australian market with their products. It is interesting to note that these companies do not only represent the traditional products that come to mind such as olive oil, olives, or cheese, but a wide range of industries, products and services. Many of these companies will be taking part in a planned trade mission scheduled to come to Melbourne in the next few months. It’s a start. With the Hellenic-Australian Business Council underway in Greece and the Go Greek campaign here in Australia, we can begin to make inroads. What’s clear is that we need new approaches to encouraging trade between our two countries ‘From little things big things grow’ as the song goes! read more
